Can Talking Be Affected In A Child After Tonsillectomy?

Hi, may I answer your health queries right now ? Please type your query here...My son has had ent probs since he was 1 (he is now two and a half). We found out that he had sleep apneoa, huge tonsils and adenoids. He has an op to remove tonsils and adenoids 6 weeks ago and we have seen a huge improvement in his development. He now has more energy, is more social and is trying to talk! My concern is his talking, could these problems have affected his talking to this degree?( he only says a couple of things!) How long will it take for him to catch up with his peers? When should I become concerned? I'm also worried that he might be autistic? Thanksx

HI...Usually Tonsillectomy will not affect speech. The vocal cords are located far below the point of surgery. A 2 and half year old should have a vocabulary of at least 250 words which are meaningful. If not I suggest you get in touch with your paediatrician for evaluation and referral to a speech therapist.
