Can Thyroid Cause Severe Cramps In Legs And Foot?

I had two recent severe cramps In my left big toe causing purplish red bruising. One was during the day and the other at night upon getting up for the bathroom. They last a long time. I have also been extremely tired for two weeks yet can t sleep at night. Could my thyroid have anything to do with this? I am on .88 levoxly. I am a 64 yo female. Thank you.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for your query.

The Cramps are caused by hyper excitability of the nerves that stimulate the muscles. Cramps at rest are very common, especially in older adults, but may be experienced at any age, including childhood. Rest cramps often occur during the night. While not life threatening, night cramps (commonly known as nocturnal cramps) can be painful, disruptive of sleep, and they can recur frequently (that is, many times a night, and/or many nights each week).

Thyroid can cause severe cramps in legs and foot.

Most cramps can be stopped if the muscle can be stretched. For many cramps of the feet and legs, this stretching can often be accomplished by standing up and walking around. Gently massaging the muscle will often help it to relax, as will applying warmth from a heating pad or hot soak.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care

General & Family Physician Dr. Haseena Hamdani's  Response
HI,
welcome to HCM
It looks like, an acute attack of Gout. Hypothyroidism does not cause such symptoms. I would suggest you to consult a Doctor. Your Doctor may diagnose gout clinically, and will advise several blood tests. Your doctor will advise you diet, and preventive tips, and medicines depending on your blood reports. Other causes could be due to exposure to extreme cold to the toes.
You are welcome for any further query.
