Can Typhoid Medication Be Taken While On Antibiotics?

I have taken 2 doses (of 4) of a typhoid vaccine. However, I just came down w/ strep throat and had to start an antibiotic today. I know the 2 medications do not mix. Should I resume the other 2 typhoid pills after I m done w/ the antibiotic, or do I need to start completely over with the typhoid vaccine?

Hello and welcome,

Yes, live attenuated typhoid vaccine can not be taken with certain antibiotics (especially sulfa drugs: bactrim, SMZ-TMP) or a person with a fever. The oral vaccine strain replicates in the gut to induce host immune response therefore antibiotics may interfere the vaccine strain replication and decrease its effectiveness. You can start over typhoid vaccine all 4 doses after 72 hours of your last antibiotic dose.

I hope the above information will be helpful for you. Please, feel free to ask me if there is anything else you need to know.

Thank you,
Malik Amonov MD
