Chest Pain When Breathing In. How To Stop The Pain?

Hi. I get alot of chest pains in my left side. Its very sharp when i breathe. Im fit and young and dont smoke . Ive looked online and i believe its called pneumothorax . I dont know how to stop the paiN. Everytime it happens i have to stop what im doing and wait for it to pass. It first occurred about 4 years ago and is really on and off. But recently its been hurting again. Is there anything i can do to stop the pain?

Hi,

You seem to be having left sided chest pain increased on inspiration. Please visit the ER/ a Pulmonologist and do not try to manage it yourself. The pain described by you seems to be a pleuritic chest pain and could be due to any pleural pathology like pleurisy, pleural effusion or pneumothorax. All these conditions need to be managed in a hospital care setting. Fluid or air collected in the pleural space in the chest needs to be drained unless the quantity is minimal. In case of pneumothorax addition of oxygen therapy hastens the recovery. Also the cause of any pleural pathology if present needs to be investigated like if it is primary or secondary to any disease like tuberculosis, COPD etc.
Thus you need to visit ER/ your doctor/ Chest physician or Pulmonologist urgently.

Hi ajwhite12
your symptom is suggestive of acute pleuritic chest pain which is sharp pain with catches on inspiration and increases on maneuvers like coughing sneezing etc

pneumothorax can be diagonsed only on clinical examination by doctor or by chest xray.

I wish you should go for a chest xray PA view and ECG and meet your doctor. the diagnosis can be acute pleuritis, pleural effusion, pneumothorax, and also angina has to be ruled out.

best wishes
