Child. Collapsed After Feeling Heavy, Feeling Of Fainting And Losing Control, Great Effort To Lift Leg From Ground For Running. MRI Normal. Thoughts?

My 12 year old son collapsed about 8 months ago stating that he just got really heavy and then lost control of his legs and went to the ground in a basketball practice. He never loss consciousness. He had enough control when we lifted his arm, to stop his arm from hitting his face. He then explained that he just got really heavy and thought he was going to faint, so he dropped to the ground. He did this collapsing thing about 3 different times after that. We went to the doctor and he checked out fine. He is heavier than my other children. The MRI came back clean. When he runs, it seems like he has to lift his feet off the ground with great effort. He seems very sluggish. Just not sure where to turn next.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

The episode looks like a vasovagal syncope which usually occurs due to prolonged standing.

In addition to MRI brain, EEG also has to be done to rule out a seizure episode.

Tilt table test to be done to confirm the diagnosis of vasovagal syncope.

Some cardiac problems like arrhythmias, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy has to be ruled out by doing 2D Echo and EKG.

Consult the pediatrician for physical examination and referral to neurologist and cardiologist to rule out the above abnormalities by investigations.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
