Child. Fever, Aches, Terrible Sore Throat Followed By Orange Colored Diarrhea. Detected Swollen Lymph Nodes, Enlarged Spleen And Liver, Mono. Advice
my son is nine...we went to the after hours clinc yesterday because he has had a fever, aches and terrible sore throat for several days. His strep test came back negative but the doctor exmained him and said his lymphnodes were swollen and his liver and spleen were enlarged. he then diagnosed him with mono. today he has had diarehea several times and the last time it was orange. is this something to be concerned about?
I am so sorry to hear about this diagnosis of mononucleosis in your child.
Diarrhea is not typical in mononucleosis. However, if the diarrhea is not profuse, I will suggest that you increase the amount of fluids intake so as to keep the child well hydrated. Diarrhea does not kill, dehydration does. So keeping the child hydrated by drinking lots of fluids prevents dehydration and keeps the child safe. However, if he should fail to drink or becomes very weak, please seek consultation.
I will like to advice that you son stays away from contact sports as his liver and spleen are fragile and can rupture easily from this infection.
Hope you find this helpful, informative and guiding. If you have more questions, please contact us. I wish your son a speedy recovery. Dr. Ditah, MD
