Child Allergic To Dust, Seasonal Crops, Complains Of Headache, Redness In Eye, Moves Arms And Legs In Shock During Sleep. Leg Syndrome?
Hello Doctor, I feel very concerned about my son during sleep. He is 6yrs and 6mths old and weighing 20kg. He is in good health except that I think he is allergic to dust and maybe a few seasonal crops like sugar cane flowers ( tropical island). A few times he complains about headache and at times he has one red eye which goes away after one or two hours. During his sleep I often find his arm or legs moving like being shocked in sleep. I have reviewed on the internet about leg syndrome or what and I am scared of reading all these. May be you could help. Thanks.

You mention that your son is in good health. It is not uncommon for children of your son's age to contract upper respiratory infection about 3-4 times in a year which can explain the headache. Diligent observation can only let us know about the allergic phenomenon - the timing of headache and redness of eyes viz-a-viz to the flowers and/or dust.
About the "leg syndrome" mentioned by you it will be good for you to discuss the issue with your doctor as it is difficult to know the type of movements of arms or legs over this platform and any other associated findings of clinical examination. It does not appear to be of much significance but still it is better to get your doubts cleared.

Sudden, jerky, shock like movement in a child during sleep is called sleep myoclonus and is usually harmless. Sleep myoclonus term is replaced now a days with periodic limb movement disorder and it should not be confused with restless leg syndrome about which you have read on the internet.
Restless leg syndrome is more common in elder age group and is more frequent in nature ( more than five per hour). Restless leg syndrome has no relation to sleep and it occurs in awake condition also.
So if this movement is not frequent or persisting for longer duration and not associated with sleep disturbance then you need not to worry.
Your other concern is about his allergy. So get an serum IgE level done if episode is frequent. If it is elevated then long term use of mast cell stabiliser like montelukast will give some relief.
