Child Diagnosed With Anemia, Advised Diet Control. Is It Safe To Give OTC Medicines For Cough?

I am trying to gain some useful information on anemia in an 8 yr old boy. My step son has been diagnosed with anemia and our pediatrician recomended diet control fo this. his biologicalmom wo has visitation thinks that it is ok to give over the counter medications to hm when he coughs for no reason and such. Is over the counter medication ok?

Over the counter medicines are alright for mild temporary cough,
For persistent cough, though a pediatric evaluation should be taken and tests done as needed,
