Child Has Continuous Cough Leading To Vomiting, Ear Infection, Tongue Pain, Low Appetite, Chest X-ray Showed Bronchitis. Suggestion?
My three year old son has been coughing for two Weeks straight and is getting worse, he s been running a fever of 103 it breaks and comes back, we were at Er Saturday, we were there for 30 minutes and sent home with them saying he has croup , no medicine prescribed. Went to drs yesterday for same thing his pediatrician sent us to the ER again to get chest xray and blood work,xray came back ok but they wouldn t do blood work. We were sent home again this time them saying he has bronchitis . He also developed an ear infection in two days and now complains his tongue hurts, he also won t drink or eat,ER was told about this as well. He coughs so bad he vomits. Need answers!

good evening, i understand ur concern. the care and treatment for croup which is of mild grade is supportive and oral antibiotics is necessary to counteract secondary infection due to damaged epithelium. firtsly take care of his hydration and nutrition. keep him in a humidified room space, a steamer will help in humidifying the room, make him sleep at an angle of 45 deg starting from his back, he needs voice rest also, avoid cold water and cold air. watch for danger signs, difficulty in breathing, labored breathing ect, he ll need ER care. regarding his ear infection, it has to be confirmed and antibiotics initiated as soon as possible to prevent otitis media. the reason he s not accepting his feeds is because of croup. reduce his fever by paracetamol syp and warm tepid sponges to prvent seizures. kindly fix an appointment with ur doc and review.

When the doctors first diagnosed the condition as croup, they were right in not prescribing any antibiotics but steroids were definitely indicated as it brings tremendous relief in croup. Croup is a severe respiratory infection caused by virus hence antibiotics are not indicated. But if croup was diagnosed, the child should ideally have been hospitalised. There is no point visiting the ER again and again. This is incorrect time management.
Your first step should be to get him hospitalised, give steroid once secondary bacterial infection is ruled out. He needs to be given bronchodilators through face mask for better relief and should not be given anything orally till he starts feeling better. He should be put on iv fluids for sometime.
Slowly but surely his condition will improve.
Wishing your child a speedy recovery.
