Child Has Ingrown Nail. Prescribed Antibiotics. Recommendation?

Hello,
My 12 year old daughter has had an ingrown nail problem for the last 4 years, do I schedule an appoitment with her pediatrician or ask to be refered out? The last time she saw her Dr., he recomended we cut her nail straight and 7 days of antibiotics.

Every 3 -4 weeks the nail bothers her.

What do you recomend?

Hi dear
Welcome to the platform of Health Care Magic
Yes Dear nails should always be cut straight, so that they do not get way to grow inside the soft tissue causing damage to the area in turn making nail bed infected.

For recurrent ingrowing nail infection, I would like to advice you that apply daily Iodine lotion (betadine lotion) soaked ear bud to all her nails margin and also after every bath. My experience says it prevents lot of nail bed infections and saves the person from taking recurrent antibiotics.
Hope your query is answered
Thanks

Pediatrician Dr. Emmette Clark's  Response
Ingrown nails are usually due to either cutting the nail too short and into the corners or in kids who pick their nails and tear them into the corner. The first thing to do, other than being careful about trimming nails, is to put an antibiotic cream or ointment on the nail and then keeping it covered with a bandaid for a few days to allow the skin to soften. Then you should be able to remove the overlying skin and gently lift the ingrown nail out and remove it.
