Child Has Lump On Neck. Asked To Remove Within A Month. What Could This Be?

My 5 year old daughter has developed a lump in her neck either being a lymph node or growth by/on it has changed in size & shape over four months, referral to ENT surgeon has led to urgent ultrasound and definite removal within month, as my daughter's were there I refrained from certain questions, and the specialist was careful in what she said avoiding removal discussion whyn children present, I want to know reasons removal is urgent and possibilities of what this growth could be????

Pediatrician 's  Response

Hi,
Thanks for placing your query here.
I can appreciate your concerns.
The most common lumps in neck are enlarged lymph nodes.
These can be caused by bacterial or viral infections, cancer , or other rare causes.
The procedure of removing the affected node & subjecting the tissue for further testing to confirm the cause is termed "excision biopsy "
Therefore the excision biopsy is the logical first step.
Further treatment will depend upon the cause found.
Hope I have answered your query.
If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Wish her a good health.
