Child Has Stuffy Nose, Cough. Taken Antibiotics Without Relief. Prescribed Fenistil. Safe Medicine?

Hi, my 15month-old has been having flu symptoms for 2 days .she has stuffy nose and have started with cough. This is third time she has caught cold in 6 months time. Everytime she is given antibiotic but it seems to be not helping her. We consulted a local doc and he prescribed fenistil by consuming 5 drops 3 times a day. Do you think it is safe to give fenistil to a 15 month- old? What can I do additional to clear the entire sputum from her system. So that she does not cold this frequently?

Hi, stuffy nose, whistling sound during breathing, running nose, sneezing ,watering from eyes without fever is symptoms of allergic bronchitis, so need not to worry. When such type of symptoms appear don't be panic. Sudden change in the temp. and some allergens are responsible for these type of things, so visit a children specialist and he will advise you some mild category bronchodilator and as soon as your's child become alright stop the tt. You will require this tt till your's child attain 13-14 yrs age. Need not to worry at all because this is not a serious disease, rather it is a common disease.

Pediatrician Dr. Synthyia Bhagat's  Response
Hi
Thanks for your query,
It is common for child to have repeated respiratory infections .
Antibiotics are not required every time as mostly it is viral or allergic in nature and settles in few days.
Fenistil is an antihistimine and can be safely given for few days.
For blocked nose you can use saline nasal drops.
For cough use mucolytic drops for 3 to 4 days.
Steam inhalation is also effective in relieving congestion.

Wishing your baby good health.
God bless..
