Child Having Cough. Can I Give ProAir?

My son is 3 years old and has had a cough for a week now. When he runs around a lot and lays down for bed his coughs get worse. Can I have him take a couple pumps of ProAir that I have from when his sister was sick awhile back? Not sure if he s old enough or not?

Hi there,

Thank you for choosing healthcaremagic.
I would be glad to answer your question.

You mentioned that your son has had a cough for about a week now and is more so when he runs around or lays down for bed.

If there is a history of asthma or eczema in the family, the likelihood of reactive airway disease in your son maybe thus everytime he gets an infection of his upper airways, he may have prolonged cough more so when he is running around.

You can surely give him a trial of proair or albuterol inhaler to see if that helps. And if it helps, you can give him 10 minutes before his playtime or when he is continuing to cough excessively.

Also, next time he is sick, you can mention to your doctor if the proair helped him.
I would suggest that you get his own inhaler for the trial instead of him using his sister's since sharing inhalers can cause infection to spread.

Also, he is young and will need a spacer and mask for effective inhalation of the medication.

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Dr. Sumeet.
