Child With Broken Arm Fixed With Metal Plates, Recommended Removal Post Follow Up, Have Intense Pain. Suggestion?
My son broke his left arem on 23 July, after 3 general s for re-placing the bones, the dr s decided to operate and fix metal plate, that operation was 13th August, having seen a follow up consultant, he says that they now need to be removed! Yesterday evening and today he is so much pain, causing him to cry, paracetamol and ibuprofen given and still no relief. He is 13. What can I do next to help him?
hi..u have not mentioned the year of surgery..is this in 2012...if so then removal of plate so early will lead to non-union...but you are saying that your child is having intense pain....the cause of severe pain must be worked out...must get consultation with your orthopaedic surgeon....i doubt wether union of fracture is complete or not...i hape ur son is not suffering from fever...look out for that and have serial x-rays..wish you health.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
Your son had fractured his left arm bone and fixed with plate & screws after open reduction.
Now one month passed & your child was advised for removal of plates by some consultant.
It is very early to remove the plate in one month duration unless there is deep infection or implant failure which hampered the healing.
So you have to visit the operating surgeon for exam. of arm & further plan acc. to that.
Regards,
