Child With Broken Collar Bone. What Are Treatment Options?

hiya my son who is 13 broke his collar bone on friday at school playin rugby he went to a n e and was told he had broke his collar bone he was told to take paracetamol and ibroprofen but was in agony last night so i took him back to a n e they did another xray and said it is starting to heal im just wondering if theres any other pain relief he can take as he is in agony and has only slept for 3 hours in 2 days with the pain ??

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

A fracture of clavicle heals uneventfully within 3-4 weeks of immobilization.

Generally, no other treatement is necessary. Simple use of a Arm sling or pouch is all that is needed to provide support to the upper limb.

Analgesic like Advil or Aleve will provide pain relief. Daily calcium supplementation is needed till the bone unites. Ice packing on the injured area as and when needed.
