Child With Chronic Cough And Sharp Needle Prick Pain All Over The Body. What Does It Indicate?

My son is 8 yrs. old. I took him to the doctor as last week on thanksgiving day he had sharp and needle pain on the bottom of his foot to the point of tears, he had pain. The following day he had a sharp pain on the left side of his stomach. The rest of the week from Nov 30 until today Dec 6 , the pain increased throughout his whole body, chest, back, finger tips, wrist, side of leg, upper chest, forehead, throat, inbetween eyes and nose,ankles... I was concerned...as the pain was strong.. I took him to doctor today and was upset with doctor as she said if it could be he was making it up that the pains he was feeling was bizzare. My son is not a boy to make up this type of pain, he's a strong boy. The doctor said she didn't see any swelling, I told her of course not, that it was sharp stabbing needlelike pains that would last for a minute and the pain would gradually go away until the next sharp pain. The doctor said if I wanted blood work done on him, I said of course..she did and no bacteria or virus present...could you possibly guide me in the right direction of what it could be? I might be changing doctor soon... My son has also had a cough since Feb of 2013, he is taking montelukast, qvar, and bromfed...could this be the cause of these sudden pains developing? The doctor said no....My sons cough has been with him for a while I don't think medication has helped...thank you

HI
Thank for asking to HCM
I really understand your concern for your son just relax every thing will be fine soon the over all history of your son is suggestive of some allergic type of picture and this type of symptoms some time makes the mother more conscious than the child it self, you first understand one thing that it is not the big problem and will come around soon the symptomatic medicine will help a lot to your son and I think the same medicine he is already taking so just wait little more time you will get nice result and stop asking the kid about his pain and problem unless he him self complains for the same, hope you can understand this have nice day.

Hi there,

Thank you for choosing healthcaremagic.
We will try our best to answer your question.

You have mentioned that your 8 yr old son is having sharp stabbing pains all over the body. Also, your son is taking montelukast, qvar and bromfed for cough that has been there since feb 2013.

There could be several possibilities.
For these sharp stabbing pains, I thing you should get your son's electrolytes checked (sodium, pottasium, calcium, phosphorus) and also you should have his vitamin D checked.
Also, if he is having prolonged cough and has had this for long, there is a possibility that his muscles might be inflamed and maybe suffering from myositis, for which he can have his CPK (creatine phosphokinase) checked.

For his cough, has he been frequently evaluated for his 'asthma', if he has frequent attacks of cough, then he will need change in his medications or increase in dosage of his qvar if he is taking it regularly. Qvar is supposed to be taken twice daily everyday and it would be more effective if taken with a spacer.
Also, if he has frequent infections with fever, then he needs further evaluation by his pediatrician and may need more investigations, a CXR needs to be done when well as well as during an infection.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr. Sumeet.
