Child With Short Stature, CBC Not Normal, Low HGB,HCT, MCH And MCV, High EOS And IG. Suggestion?
Hello Doctor! My son is almost 8 years old and short stature. My doctor ordered blood test and bone age X-ray for him. The result is that TSH , T4, and SED Rate all fall into normal range. However, the CBC is abnormal. Low HGB, HCT, MCV, MCH, and RDWSD, high EOS and IG. The doctor refered my son to endocronologist. My question is why the doctor send my son to the endocronologist? What is your idea about my son s CBC results? I appreciate it!
Short stature can result from endocrinological causes. In fact it is one of the major causes of short stature. The doctor sent your son to endocrinologist to rule out the hormonal causes of short stature.
Abnormal CBC results can very well result from nutritional or hormonal causes. But it would be more helpful if you could post the values. Also you didn't mention about the bone ageX ray result your doctor took that too would help to reach a diagnosis.
I would advise my patients to get a growth hormone estimation as the next step.
Thank you for consulting HCM, hope to hear from you about your son's progress.
