Child With Swelling In Front Of The Ear, With Cough, Swollen Neck And Salivary Glands, Bruise On Thigh, Elevated WBC. What Treatment Can Be Given?
Six and half year old boy, Swelling of the area in front of the ear, really bad pain for 3 days couldn t eat or move his neck . Had blood work done, white blood cell slightly elevated so they said it was probably viral. Since then he s gotten a cough and swollen glands you can see in his neck and swelling of the salivory glands still. Today he has a huge bruise on his thigh that is about 4 inches long and three wide, one with white colored skin in the center the other slightly darker, and to push on it it does not hurt. He doesn t recall falling.

Though the answers may not be relevant to your child, it will help those who have similar problem
A.
Swelling in front of the ear and salivary glands swelling, we may assume that it is probably a viral illness, probably mumps. Of course bacterial infections can also cause the same. Then the blood counts would have come with evidence for bacterial infections.
B.
The bruise you are describing appears to be purpuric patch which needs medical evaluation. This means that the blood has leaked into the skin. This is divided into harmless conditions and those conditions which require evaluation. Harmless conditions are usually viral fevers.
This is due to low platelet count, blood vessel problem and rarely blood composition problem.
these need to be ruled out. Again in this also there are self limiting conditions, meaning we need not do much intervention
This child needs a medical evaluation
