Child's Belly Getting Bigger Than Her Body. Prescribed METRONIDAZOLE. Is It Safe For Child?
Hi.. My name is Catherine aND I have an 18 month old daughter. We started noticing her belly, it s quite big considering her body is slim. We went to a doctor yesterday and prescribed this medicine METRONIDAZOLE to be taken 3x a day for 3 days. the doc said it will helpp her poop. Is it safe to take the med as I have been researching and this medicine is for vagibal infections etc.. Please help me.

Yes this medicine is safe for kids. But the indication is not clear --may be they found something in stool examination.It is used in many situations.I hope they will order an ultrasound examination also for big belly.There are many reasons for big belly and one has to do various tests apart from good clinical examination to diagnose the cause.Good luck Dr Uma

Metronidazole is normally prescribed in conditions like Amoebiasis etc.
Normally the belly of a 18 month is protruberant and nothing needs to be done for this condition.
what is the weight of the baby. does she have any other complaints.
if there are no other complaints like blood in the stool........... etc such drugs are not required to be used.
Metronidazole is not laxative
