Constipation, Pumping Stools Manually Through Bottom. Have Poorly Managed Type 2 Diabetes. Habit Of Having Rolled Oats. Guide

My73 year old father has type 2 diabetes for the last 10years and has been poorly managed. In the last 3years he has been severely constipated. In the last year he would only pass stool mum manually pumped it out thru his bottom. Its as if his digestive system is shutting down. We like to know if his ritual of rolled oats/porridge can also be the cause outside of his diabetes?

hi!
there can be lot many causes for his constipation- 1. age 2.uncontrolled diabetes, causing gastroparesis and autonomic neuropathy. 3. may be less exercise 4.poor fluid intake. i don't feel oats and porridge can be constipating, they have very high content of fiber and in fact help to relieve constipation in some cases.
i would suggest he can be given mild laxative by a treating physician, as pumping of hard stools, requires lot of push by heart and often is very distressing to person, increasing fluid intake can also help him.
hope this helps you.
