Continuous Dry Cough. Could I Have Lesions In Esophagus?

I have continuous dry tickly cough, very little catarrh, mainly after eating food containing small or dry particles e.g rice, crisps. I recently nearly choked from coughing and caused a rupture in blood vessels round one eye. This was after eating salad . Could I have a lesion in my oesophagus which traps these small particles or a raw section which is hypersensensitive?

Hi and thanks for the query,

It is important to know if you cough up everything when you eat/ or you cough only after eating certain foods. this difference is fundamental in distinguishing a mechanical blockage from an allergic reaction.

A gastroenterologist could be helpful to do a proper clinical evaluation for gastritis, gastroesophagal refluc disease with aid of a fibroscopy. A chest X ray, blood tests in search of raised esinophil levels could be suggestive of an allergic process. Serum Immunoglobulin levels while raised are almost diagnostic of allergy.

Basic findings will orient management, either by your family physician or an allergist if need be.

Best regards,

Bain LE, MD.
