Could Buspar And Lexapro Intake For Anxiety And Depression Lead To Visual Hallucinations?

Hi, my Aunt s husband died about 6 months ago and a week ago she asked the doctor for medication since she was anxious and crying a lot. The doctor placed her on buspar and lexapro a week ago. She is telling me she is seeing things that are not there, like writing on a wall, a man at the door. Could some of it be the medications?

Hi,

Both Buspar (buspirone) and Lexapro (escitalopram) are medications commonly used to treat anxiety and depression. While visual hallucinations are not listed as a common side effect of these medications, they can occur in rare cases. If your aunt's hallucinations started after starting these medications, it is possible that they could be a side effect. However, it is also possible that her hallucinations are related to her grief or another underlying condition.

Your aunt needs to speak with her doctor about these hallucinations as soon as possible. The doctor may need to adjust her medication or consider other potential causes of her symptoms. In general, it is important to closely monitor any changes in behavior or symptoms when starting a new medication and to report any concerns to a healthcare provider promptly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
