I have been taking 10mg citalopram for 18months following a nervous breakdown,I recently had a blood test the first since taking citalopram, my cholesterol level had gone up from 5.9 to 6.5 despite me embarking on a low fat diet 8 months ago. I cant understand how this has happened could the citalopram caused this I have an appointment with my doctor next week
Hi and welcome to HCM. Citalopram is an antidepressant medication that affects neurotransmitters. Common side effects are 1.Inability to have an Erection 2.Sexual Problems 3.Problem with Ejaculation 4.Dry Mouth 5.Drowsiness 6.Chronic Trouble Sleeping 7.Excessive Sweating 8.Involuntary Quivering 9.Feel Like Throwing Up
As you can see, citalopram does not affect blood lipid levels. Your high cholesterol may be due to other reasons, but it can be brought under control. Avoid high fat and oil containing diet, do some physical exercise if possible and inform your doctor about this. All the best Regards Dr Santosh
