Could Dizziness And Metallic Taste In Mouth Be Related To Low Sodium Levels?

This morning I"ve been lightheaded/dizzy and had a strange metalic/numbing taste in my mouth. A couple of weeks ago I started a new diet to reduce calories and carbs, but I'm getting the approriate nutrients from what I do eat. Could the symptoms be related to too little sodium?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Generally speaking low sodium could cause dizziness due to hypotension. But in your case I suspect the low calorie intake and dehydration as a cause of dizziness. The metallic taste could be attributed to any of the supplements that you are taking.

I would suggest you to go on a balanced diet and sip as much as lemon juice as you can through out the day. This will keep you hydrated, your electolyte levels balanced and will also aid weight loss. Do not hesitate to consult a doctor or a nutritionist for help.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Deepti Shivakumar
