Could Ear Pain Of A 4 Year Old Be Due To Ear Infection?

My four year old is complaining her ear hurts. She has never had an ear infection so I am not sure what the symptoms are and when to take her to her doctor. What are the symptoms of an ear infection and/or what could be causing her ear to hurt and what should I do? Thanks.

Earache can occur in infection. In fact it is the early symptom and ear discharge will occur latter. Also any swelling behind the ear in mastoid region with redness is worrisome. Also any foreign body insertion into the ear canal can cause such symptoms. I think otoscopic examination of the ear canal needs to be done.
