Could Heavy Period With Abdominal And Back Pain Indicate A Possibility Of A Miscarriage?

I think I may be having a miscarriage. I am 19 years old, in the past 2 months I have gained 14 pounds. I have unprotected sex. I am bleeding very irregular and heavy, I have used 3 tampons in the last 4 hours, and i have like this blood clot like stuff coming out, and have severe abdominal pain, horrible unbareable cramps, lower back pain, and have a weird discharge. What do you think it might be if its not a miscarriage? I have not taken a pregnancy test yet.

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

If you have missed your menstrual cycle for two months, the hormones can buildup to such a level that when you do finally get a menstrual cycle it can be very heavy, painful, and not typical of what you normally see. The hormones that have built up over those two months can also make you bloated, gain weight, and feel symptoms similar to that of pregnancy.

Taking a urine pregnancy test at this point would be able to tell you whether these symptoms are due to miscarriage or due to an abnormal menstrual cycle.

However, if you are bleeding extremely heavily and are having such a significant amount of pain I do suggest that you see local medical care by gynecologist in order to determine if you are having a miscarriage, and if not, to be able to help you treat your pain and stop the bleeding.

If you are bleeding heavy enough to leak through both the tampon and pad or if you soak up had completely within one hour for more than two hours time, you should go to a local emergency room, as your bleeding may be so heavy to be life-threatening and produce severe anemia. Similarly, if you feel dizzy or like you are about to pass out, you should also go to an emergency room or seek immediate medical care.

In the meantime if you have access to one, I recommend you perform a urine pregnancy test. If it is positive, you should also seek emergency medical care as the symptoms are most likely due to a miscarriage.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful. I hope that you seek medical care promptly so doctor can properly diagnose and treat your bleeding.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
