Could Hernia Medications Cause Constant Diarrhea, Cough With Pleghm With Having Long History Of Acid Reflux?
my father is 83 with long history of acid reflux, 25 yrs, hiatus hernia 10 yrs. Past three days he has constant diaherra which he associates with the mediction for the hernia, I do not know the med. He has had periods of no symptons off and on meds, he is very weak at the moment, last night he brought up large amounts of phlegm. Any suggestions.
Hello, I can understand your concern on your father's health. 1) If treatment consist of motility promoting medication which also increase intestinal movement then it might be cause for development of diarrhea. 2) Development of phlegmon with diarrhea in old age patient indicate liquid consistency of stool from inadequate defecation secondary to blockage of lower part of intestine (rectum) from hard stool. This can be confirmed by physical examination of rectum by general surgeon. 3) This can be prevented with stool softeners but before starting this medication, it is important to rule out other causes for diarrhea. 4) If diarrhea is associated with motility medication then it can be stopped for few days.
Hope I answered your query. If you have any further question, I would be happy to help you!
