Could High Altitudes Cause Delay In Periods?

I just got back from Colorado, skiing in the rockie mountains, and I was supposed to start my period two days ago, the day we left, and still haven t started. Could the altitude be effecting my menstual period? And when will it go back to normal? Thanks, Savannah

OBGYN 's  Response
Hello, and I can help you today.

A change in your environment- from travelling itself, changing time zones, and different physical activity levels can certainly delay and/or make you miss a period. I cannot tell you how long it will take for you to get it- it can be a few more days or you can even skip a whole month- but once it does come back the next cycle after that should be at your normal interval. If you are at risk for pregnancy, you should do a pregnancy test, and if it is negative you just need to wait and see. If you miss your cycle for three months- a visit to an OBGYN would be advisable because they can do hormone tests to better figure out what is wrong and prescribe medication to make your period come back.

I hope I adequately answered your question and my advice was helpful.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
