Could Intake Of Animal Protein Cause Lower Abdominal Pain?

1 hours after I eat animal protein, I get severe pain in my liver/gall bladder area that radiates from right to left and down my left side. Some discomfort also exists in my lower abdomin. I always have discomfort in these regions pain scale of 4-5, but the protein increases the pain to 7-8. What is causing this discomfort?

Hello and Welcome,
You only notice this pain with meat? Is it "fatty" meat, all meat, some meat, can you be more specific? I cannot diagnose on the forum, but my patients with gallstones have similar complaints.

Do you notice the same pain when you eat a fatty food of any kind? There are a lot of tests I can think of, but the simplest at this point is to try to take the animal protein out of your diet and see if the pain eases. Does milk, cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese cause the same pain? If not, these are all good sources of protein until you can be physically evaluated by a doctor.

For now,if you were my patient, I would temporarily recommend that you follow a low fat vegetarian diet and make an appointment with your doctor for a physical exam and diagnosis/treatment / diet order.

Depending on your formal diagnosis, you may need supplemental vitamins if absorption is an issue in your treatment. Regards, Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
