Could My Ankle Pain And Swelling Be From Citalopram?

I'm a healthy 19 year old female,I'm on 40mg of citalopram for depression and recently I've noticed that my ankles are swelling at night and are hurting as well. I don't drink pop, I don't eat anything (besides sugar) in excess. I'm not a salt fanatic. I weigh 125 pounds, and im 5 and a half feet tall. I drink water, not as much as I probably should, but I drink a fair amount of water. I probably pee 5 times a day....could my ankle pain and swelling be from my citalopram? I also deal with insomnia but refuse to take medication for it, I'd rather treat it with lifestyle changes and just deal with it. I'm just trying to give you as much info about me as possible

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Citalopram is a SSRI drug and the drug is relatively safe anti anxiety and anti depressant drug. In some rare case reports the drug is known to cause pain in joints and swelling in joints. So the pain and swelling in ankle you are having could be occurring due to doses of Citalopram but other causes should be ruled out first. Arthritis, nutritional deficiencies etc are common reasons of such presentation. You have poor sleep also and this could be the reason for tiredness and joint pains. So for proper evaluation consult your psychiatrist.

If other causes are ruled out then discuss with your psychiatrist to wean off the drug and to start some other drug.

Hope this helps you. Take care. Thanks.
