Could My Persistent Cough, Mucus, And Morning Shortness Of Breath Be Side Effects Of Olmesartan/HCTZ?

Hi, i am 44f. I have been taking Olmesartan Medoxomil/Hydrochlorothiaz 40-25MG once daily since 12/20/24. It has helped greatly with by high bp but i have had a horrible cough since i started taking it. Because i am coughing up clear mucus with the cough my dr assumed its allergies, never really had before, and has me taking a daily allergy pill and nasal spray. I have found myself needing to use my rescue inhaler in the mornings because i wake up short of breath. Could the Olmesartan be the cause of this? I am also taking 10MG of amlodipine and 100MG of sertraline daily.

Hello,

Olmesartan rarely causes chronic cough. HCTZ (a diuretic) can worsen asthma symptoms in sensitive people. It does not cause mucus or cough. Chronic cough with mucus and shortness of breath can be caused by asthma, postnasal drip, or gastric reflux. Amlodipine and sertraline rarely cause cough but may cause reflux/GERD, and that can trigger cough indirectly.

You need to be reevaluated, and symptoms should not be brushed off as just allergies. It’s important to revisit your GP and get tested. Stay away from stress, both emotional and physical, as stress triggers cough. Just relax and manage stress. Get connected to a physical therapist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
