Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Could My Persistent Diarrhea With A Burnt Smell, Bloating, And Gas Be Caused By An Infection?
I’ve been having some diarrhea that has been watery and has been going on for a week or so. It started off a black color and now has turned green with a sort of burnt smell to it. I haven’t had a fever or any other symptom expect bloating and gas. Could this be an infection of some sort?
Since you had black stool, get a stool examination (R/E and C/S). Also, get blood work done to check for signs of infection or anemia. Get clinically examined by a GP or a gastroenterologist for a colonoscopy or endoscopy if internal bleeding is suspected. Keep yourself well hydrated by drinking lots of fluids. Avoid dairy, caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods along with any addictions. Track stool frequency and appearance.
Your symptoms are indicative of bacterial gastroenteritis or Clostridium difficile infection. Take anti-diarrheal and bland food like rice, bananas, some toast and red tea. Your treatment will depend on the type of infection you have. It will be accordingly treated with antibiotics, antacids, etc.
I hope I have answered your question. Take care.
