Could Oral Intake Of Susten Cause Problem In Pregnancy?

Hi Doctors,

My last period came on Dec 22, 2011 and when we did a Pregnancy Test (hCG), it showed a weakly positive line (Thin purple line) and doctor told that i am pregnant and suggested to intake orally Susten 200 mg and a Folic Acid tablet and also put an injection hucog 5000. My cousin told me that Susten 200 should not be taken orally but it should be taken through vagina. Orally intaking Susten 200 would cause any side effects? And because of this weakly positive line in the test, does it affect the baby or this line indicates anything about baby's growth? Please advise.

Hi and welcome to HCM

I can understand your concern

Susten contains progesterone, However progesterone is not approved for use during pregnancy in any advanced country such as US, UK etc. Some authorities in the past used to recommend its use in recurrent miscarriage or threatened abortion but now there is now no evidence of any benefit from such practice and recommend against the use in early pregnancy unless there is proven deficiency.

One problem with this medicine is that female baby may suffer from hirsutism (unwanted hair on face, chest etc). Therefore if at all progesterones have to be given when there is documented deficiency, it is preferable to give dydrogesterone (sold as Duphaston) or medroxyprogesterone (sold as Meprate).
This you have to clarify with your doctor and if he is confident on what he is recommending then go for it. Many doctor still prescribe susten and baby has born normally with out any defects. Now its you to decide after your doctor consultation.
