Could The Weight Gain Be Due To Loestrin?

I have been taking loestrin since august, I was just tested for thyriod because I have gained at least 13 pounds since even though I have watched my diet and added working out in regularly. My doctor needs to do more thyriod testing because my t4 were off, my question is should I cease using the Loestrin in order to figure out what is going on, continuing use Loestrin, or switch birth controls all together? Will do any of these mess up the test?

Hi,

Loestrin is a combination hormonal contraceptive that contains ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone. Weight gain is a possible side effect of hormonal contraceptives, including Loestrin. However, it is important to note that weight gain can also be caused by other factors such as changes in diet, exercise routine, or underlying medical conditions.

If you are concerned about the potential impact of Loestrin on your weight or thyroid function, it is important to speak with your doctor. They may recommend additional testing or suggest alternative birth control options. It is generally not necessary to stop using Loestrin to test thyroid function. However, your doctor may recommend a waiting period before testing to ensure accurate results. They may also suggest adjusting the timing of your pill to avoid interference with testing.

Ultimately, the decision to continue using Loestrin, switch to another contraceptive, or stop using contraception altogether is a personal one that should be made in consultation with your healthcare provider. Your doctor can help you weigh the risks and benefits of each option and make an informed decision that is best for your individual needs.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
