Could Too Much Of Thyroxin In Blood Be The Cause For Headaches?

I have an underactive thyroid and take 125mcg's of thyroxine a day. I have just had a routine blood test and I have now got too much thyroxine in my blood. My GP is going to check it again in a couple of weeks as it is a possibility that when the blood was taken I accidentally took two lots of tablets. However I have been having bad headaches the last 2 or 3 months. I wake up with one and go to bed with one. If I am having too much thyroxine could this be the cause of the headaches? My GP says that because I take pain killers so regularly they could be having the adverse effect and he has prescribed me with 10mg of Amitriptyline to try and break the cycle. But surely if there is a chance the thyroxine level is causing the headaches this should be rectified first? Please let me know what you think. Thank you

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hi dear user
I have gone through your question.
I can understand your concern.

Headache is a common side effect of thyroxine,so it is possible that this drug can be the culpit of your headache.
Even the pain killers can cause rebound headaches.

My advice is to follow your doctor's prescription but at the other side, i suggets to talk with an endocrinologist because in my opinion you need to repeat the thyroid tests(TSH,free T3,freeT4)as soon as possible and adjust the dosage of sinthroid accordingly to the results.

Remember that synthroid is usually taken once a day with a full glass of water 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast for best adsorption into the body.
I'm sure that if you take Synthroid properly ,you will fell much better.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Thank you for using HCM.
Best regards.
