Could Unprotected Oral Sex Lead To Enlarged Lymph Node And Night Sweats Implying HIV Infection?

Hi, I have enlarged lymph node on the right side running in front of SCM for about 11-12 months. I also have enlarged node on the left side jaw angle that appeared later. I get night sweats, feel tired. I got a positive ppd test few days ago (was negative last time 2011). But I am scared that I have HIV as I recieved unprotected oral sex and protected vaginal sex in late 2010. What do u think is going on here? Thank you.

Hello dear,

First of all, HIV cannot be diagnosed only with the basis of symptoms.
The chances of acquiring HIV occurs in 2 cases:
1. If your partner is affected with HIV
2. If there is any cut/raw surface in your mucosa through which the infection can spread.

If the above mentioned criteria doesn't hold true for your case, then there is no need to worry about getting HIV.

There are certain tests like p24 assay or PCR for HIV, which becomes positive within a week and are almost 100 % sensitive.
Even the presence of a single virus in the body can be detected by PCR.
So, if this test comes negative, you can be sure that you are safe.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
