Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Most of the times nocturnal leg cramps occur for no known reason and they are usually harmless. In general, these are likely to be related to muscle fatigue, dehydration and nerve problems.

In rare situations, night leg cramps can be associated with an underlying disorder such as peripheral artery disease.

Self-care activities that might help prevent and resolve leg cramps include:

* Drinking plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration
* Stretching your leg muscles or riding a stationary bicycle for a few minutes before you go to bed
* Massaging the cramped muscle with your hands
* Taking a hot shower or warm bath

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hi and welcome to HCM
Nocturnal leg cramps are true cramps and not spasms. The muscle remains in a cramped and contracted position, which accounts for the intensity of the pain.
Some tips to relieve cramps immediately:
Apply a hot compress to the cramped muscles.
Massage the cramped muscles.
Stretch and flex. Lie on your back in bed, lift your legs, extend them toward the ceiling, and then point your toes to the ceiling and flex them slowly back toward your calf.
Hope this will helps you. Take care.
