Cut The Knuckle Skin Off And Stitched It Up, Could Barely Bend. How Long To Heal ?

The other day I was trimming the stems of my flowers and I cut half of my knuckle skin off on my index finger I could see the tendons, it was deep I went to the er and they stitched it up and put me in a split. The nurse said I damaged my tendon a little but not enough so it would heal itself. What kind of out come with it have after I take the splint off in 2 weeks. I would bearly Bend it at the time of injury and I hurts almost 24/7 now but it hurts all the way down to the knuckle on my hand.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Looks like you had a deep cut with minimal injury to the small muscle tendons of your index finger.

Such injuries need immobilization for a while and subsequent physiotherapy to attain normal usage. The muscles are attached to the metacarpals, small long bones in the knuckle and that is the reason you are having persisting pain.

You may achieve complete function of your finger after 6 - 8 weeks.

Hope this helps.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

As per the description, there is no complete tear of the tendon of your finger. So nothing much to worry about.

Generally, finger joints (both MCP joints & IP joints) are notorious for development of soft tissue contractures even with a small period of immobilization.

So I suspect joint contracture in you as a cause of difficulty in bending the joint.

Active PHYSIOTHERAPY is the only way that can give back your normal movement in your finger joints.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
