Diagnosed Pan Colitis. Constant Diarrhea Due To Intake Of Immuran. Suggested Injection Once In 2 Weeks For 6 Months, And One Step Away From Colectomy. Advice

Hi I have been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis 15 years ago now it evolved into pan colitis. Sixth month ago after a colonoscopy my said now it is a pan colitis and put me on prednisone with immuran( I was on asacol before for the whole time). Now six months later and off prednisone I have constant diarrhea so the Dr. said that immuran didn't work for me we have to step up in the treatment and after a colonoscopy he suggests I be injected once every 2 weeks for the next sixth month to cure my colon. He said we are one step away from colorectomy. I need a second opinion please. Thank you.

Hello,

Thanks for posting on HCM,

Pancolitis is more severe form of ulcerative colitis and people suffering from that have the tendency of developing colon cancer. I feel up to this point your doctor has been doing the right things to get you treated and as he suggested, I think colorectomy will be the definitive treatment which will both act in relieving you from symptoms and at the same time preventing you from reaching the level of cancer.
Both prednisone and immuran are immunosuppressive medications and should be used with care when being administered in long term. Both could also contribute to you developing resistance to getting cured from your colitis and also facilitate development of your pancolitis to a cancer.

Hope this helps
