Diagnosed With Genital Hsv-1. Got It From Partner. How To Prevent It? Can He Still Give It To Me Orally?

I was recently diagnosed for genital hsv-1. I got it from my boyfriend who has had oral hsv-1 since he was 8 years old. Can I give it to him genitally now? Can he still give it to me orally? If he performs oral sex on me, will his cold sores get worse? Since both of us have the virus, should we be worried about contracting it in different places or making it worse? Is there anything to do to prevent it- like both of us taking antiviral pills?

Thanks for query on HCM.
Genital herpes is a common and highly contagious infection usually spread through sex.
There is no permanent genital herpes cure. You’ll have to learn to live with it. But some simple changes to your lifestyle and to your attitude can make it easier to cope.
Lifestyle changes can reduce outbreaks.
Antiviral medicines are helpful to reduce outbreaks and further spread.
These drugs can also reduce the severity and duration of symptoms when they do flare up. Drug therapy is not a cure, but it can make living with the condition easier.
Take multi vitamin, protein and other supplements to boost up your immunity.
You have to always go for protected sex.
Avoid oral and any other unnatural pattern of sexual activity.
Keep in touch with your doctor.

Hi. HSV-I can infect both oral and genital mucosa. Although before the change of sexual practices in 90's it was the most common cause of Oro-labial herpes and HSV-2 was the commonest cause of Genital herpes but now it has all changed due to change in sexual practices and oro-labial and genital herpes can be caused by any type of HSV (I or II).

Herpes gets transmitted as a result of intimate contact be it Peno-vaginal sex, cunnilingus(oral sex performed by a female) or fellatio(oral sex performed by male).

Since you got genital herpes by fellatio (oral sex performed by male partner). So you can further transmit infection to your boyfriend via Peno-vaginal sex since he still does'nt have genital herpes.

Cunnilngus (oral sex performed by female partner) is safer since you don't have labial herpes and thus cannot transmit it to your boyfriend.

If he performs oral sex on you he will get reinfected and can develop a clinical episode of herpes.
Both of you have HSV-I type infection, so theoritically both of you can still get HSV-II type infection from outside.
Once infected Herpes will stay in the nerve ganglion for your entire life and their is no way to eliminate it permanently.
Antiviral pills can be taken for episodic treatment just for the episode(5 days) or for suppressive treatment(1 year) if their are frequent relapses of genital or labial herpes causing considerable morbidity.

I would advice that you visit a dermatologist and clarify further if you have any doubts.

take care
