Diarrhea For Long, Gurgles In Abdomen. Stool Test Shows Many Yeast Present. Anything Serious ?
Hi. I had diarrhea for over 2 weeks, now slightly improving, along with gurgles in my lower abdomen. I had stool tests done as follows:
--culture: salmonella & shigella...none found
--clostridum difficile toxin A & B, EIA...not detected
--ova and parasitese, stool conc and perm smear...no ova or parasites; many yeast present
I feel fine and my diarrhea is improved. The "many yeast" scares me. Does it necessarily mean I've a serious problem?
As all the usual tests are for bacterial and parasite cause, probably you may be suffered from Viral gastroenteritis.
Yeasts in the stool are mostly vegetative type and they may not cause diarrhea. If the diarrhoea persists for more than one month, you have really worry about some other chronic infective and fungal causes.
So you do not need to worry.
My advice is drink enough ORS salt solution to overcome dehydration.
Yeast is a part of our normal intestinal mucosal flora. But it is better to confirm the type of the yeast with help of further lab study like culture and staining. Because it may be increased in stool in conditions of ill health and diseased condition.
Hope this helps. Take care.
