Difficulty In Conceiving. Diagnosed Bulky Uterus. Explain

I am a 26 years old lady from Nigeria, I did a scan and I was told I have a bulky uterus, I am afraid as I don't know what it means. I have not been able to conceive for my husband for the past 5 years ever since we got married... Is this the possible cause of my infertility? What can I do to treat myself and get pregnant for my husband., I need your help doctor. Thank you.

Hello,

Thanks for posting on HCM,

Generally when we use the term bulky uterus we may mean adenomyosis or endometriosis (two slightly different diseases conditions) or could be multiple uterine fibroids or uterine cancer. Given your age we could easily rule out adenomyosis and uterine cancer (unlikely given your age of 26). Adenomyosis is uterine thickening that occurs when endometrial tissue, which normally lines the uterus, moves into the outer muscular walls of the uterus. It occurs mostly in women above 30.
Endometriosis is one of the most common cause of primary infertility in younger women. Endometriosis is a female health disorder that occurs when cells from the lining of the womb (uterus) grow in other areas of the body. This can lead to pain, irregular bleeding, and problems getting pregnant (infertility).
If through a scan, this could not be detected then your doctor or a gyneco-obstetrician may need to take a sample tissue from your uterus and analyze through laboratory to determine the type of tissues causing the bulky uterus.
In order to treat endometriosis (if that becomes the conclusion), your doctor will need to consider your present symptoms (if any).
Treatment may include:
- Medications to control pain
- Hormone medications to stop the endometriosis from getting worse
- Surgery to remove the areas of endometriosis or the entire uterus and ovaries (which I doubt that you will want this).
We should not also forget that conceiving a baby is both sided and so your husband will also need to be checked for fertility.

Hope this helps
