Difficulty Noticed In Bowel Movement After Taking Ampicillin
My 95 yr. old Father was diagnosed with a U.T.I. about a week ago, and sent home from the hospital with a prescription for Ciproflaxcin. He had a bad reaction to that, so he was prescribed Ampicillin. I have tried to administer the medications as directed, and he is still not feeling well. He has not had a bowel movement since last week either. I ve tried to encourage him to eat, however, his appetite is sparse. So, in lieu of solid food, I give him the Ensure liquid. Usually, antibiotics work within just a couple of days...so I m puzzled and very concerned. Any help is appreciated.
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history about your 95 year old Father having urinary tract infection for which Ciprofloxacin was prescribed but stopped due to reaction, hence was put on Ampicillin but has no effects. Appetite is sparse and hence given Ensure liquid. Still not feeling well. It looks that the antibiotic is not really suitable for the UTI hence I will recommend the following: Send the urine and blood for culture and sensitivity which give the possible best acting antibiotics and helps in deciding the actual cause of the problems and gives proper solution to the problems.
