Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Do Bile Acid Sequestrants Help In Treating Gallbladder Stones?
my husband has gall stones and is refusing surgery. He is on a low fat diet and usually can go for 2-3 weeks without problems, but he needs to loose about 80 lbs. Would a bile sequestrant help the stones dissolve or help with weight loss? What about turmeric? I ve read it can help prevent stones, but can also cause painful g.b. contractions if you already have stones. He is very inactive due to knee pain, but he could use a Nordic tract which is easy on his knees. His bone structure is too large for a knee replacement, not a candidate. He has done a lot of juice fasting, but never does it long enough to get into ketosis to loose weight. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
As far as the gallstone is a concern, size of stone matters a lot. Big size stone may not be dissolved with medicine but one has to go for surgery and nowadays, it is being taken with a scope with very minimal pain and post-op complication. Small size stone can be tried with "Ursodeoxycholic acid" orally but it has to be taken for a long time, sometimes it may dissolve the stone.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Akhtarhusain
