Do Symptoms Such As Hyperactivity, Headaches And Nail Biting Indicate ADHD?

Hi, my son is 9 years old and we have noticed over the last several years he is very hyperactive and does some repetitive movements and things. Some of his norms are being loud a lot, energetic, beating drums on the table, clapping (out of excitement), nail biting, he’s made up some of his own coded words he will say sometimes ( he still makes sense just changed up the words for what seems like fun). The big one I started noticing last year is he outlines his fingers on one hand with a finger from his other hand a lot. Daily and throughout the day. He does get headaches to the point of throwing up 1-2 times every two months of so but that might be unrelated. He’s got a little bit of a harder time making friends too. Besides this he’s smart, gets good grades, athletic, desires to do well in school, has a good kind heart, good at conversations etc. Does this sound like ADHD? Stereotypes? I’m just not sure. And I am going to get testing for him.

Neurologist 's  Response
Hello,

First of all, if he had ADHD, he could not achieve good grades in school. Your child may have depression and he needs a psychiatric assessment as soon as possible.

Second, his stereotypes are aiming to relieve his inner tension,so do not worry about them.

Third, his treatment should be psychotherapy and some medications to relieve anxiety.

Finally, the way of parental treatment of the child is essential in developing psychiatric illness and treating it, so you should help him to recover from his depression.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dr/Mustafa, Neurologist
