Does Aleve Cause Recurring Cyclic Vomiting?

To Whom it may concern: My husband Mike started on July 11th with cyclic vomiting, about every three to four weeks, sometimes, two weeks. It lasts about two to four days. He was in the Aspirus Wausau hospital over Labor day. ( Sept. 4th thru the 6th). While he was there they did extensive testing of heart, liver, stomach and pancrease. The tests came back fine and they said it was due to him taking more than 2 Aleve a day. He had only done this twice in two months and had taken 6 in one day. Otherwise, it was two a day. He has not taken another aleve and very few tylenol. He has stenosis in his back and sometimes it is painful. He has and some treatments for this. The vomiting continues, and still no results. At the time that he is having one of his episodes, his heart rate plumets to 40. He was requested to take his blood pressure and heart rate twice a day since Sept. 6th. He is very faithful about it and has good results all the time. In 1985 Mike had Whipple surgery because he had a tumor on his pancreas. Fortunately, it was not cancer. They removed 40% of his pancreas, lower part of stomach, upper part of small intestine and gall bladder. He is now 74, active and trys hard to stay healthy. For the last three years, they have not been able to get his Vitamin D3, above 18. Vitamin D is a fat soluable vitamin and consequently, due to his Whipple surgery , they told him as he grows older, his body would not absorb or produce some of the essentials. Fats just go through him. He is on some supplements. His last episode of vomiting was Dec 14th and 15th. We normally are in Chandler, AZ this time of the year, but we decided because we do not have a Dr there, we would try one more thing. They have Mike on a monitor for 21 days to check the rythmn, in case he needs a pace maker. If we do not have any success with this, we are heading to Chandler and asking, Mike s Dr to refer us to a Dr at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. Are there any effects of low Vitamin D. In your experience have you ever run into this. We would appreciate anything at all, to help us to understand what is taking place. Sincerely, Mike and Judy Black

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

* The cyclic vomiting is related to short bowel syndrome with previous. Ehipple surgery as there is very less sphincter controls over the original valve regions that was present before surgery.

I would recommend to discuss the need of an upper GI endoscopy with his treating doc and if the one is available with results kindly share with me for the further correspondence. Awaiting for your response.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
