Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband has been taking Atorvastatin 10 mg for just over one year. Over the past several months he has been very tired, unable to sleep at night, experiencing muscle soreness, increase irritability and is now experiencing a slightly sore throat and tongue. After reading about the effect of a statin drug on CoQ10 and taking with his physician we are going to introduce a supplement of CoQ10 to his regiment. The physician did not feel the medication was related to some of his symptom (sore throat and tongue). Is it possible the statin is responsible for the soreness?
Atorvastatin belongs to the statin group of medicines, one of the side effects of which is to produce muscle inflammation and pain. You could have his blood examined for creatinine kinase.
If it is elevated, atorvastatin is likely to be the cause of the muscle soreness and has to be stopped. There is a more serious condition called rhabdomyolysis which can have dangerous complications with the uses of statins like atorvastatin.
So if creatinine kinase is elevated, it would be better to stop atorvastatin and consult your doctor without delay. Do get back to me if you have further queries.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
