Does Depakote Affect The Brain?

I m on Valporic Acid or Depakote. My amonia level was 74 and now it is 78. Some research & development doctors from Shaklee all over the world have been discussing my case for days. I ve been on Depakote for 30 years and they feel that it is messing with my brain and that is one of the reasons I ve become more confused & balance has been effected. I have been very well controlled on Depakote. I have status seizures that started September 11, anywhere between 2003 & 2008. My seizures are so severe that it is like I have had shaken baby syndrome. I have to be retrained in all the ADL S of daily living. Walking, talking, balance, eating & etc. The Shaklee Research Doctors are asking if they could get a copy of the actual Brain MRI. They want to see how far my brain is pulled away. I plan to send it to them beside whatever they want. Because of being on the medication for so long, they feel that I will eventually lose my kidney function and liver function and brain function & then death. But if I start taking the Shaklee Alfalfa Complex it would slowly bring my Ammonia Level in my blood down. If you doctors don t know, Shaklee is the most pure Dietary Supplement made in the world. Everything that Shaklee sells is NATURAL. Thank you

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per my clinical experience, the Depakote is responsible for increasing the GABA levels in the brain for its actions, the long term elevated GABA levels will affect the brain function of various receptor level and other neuronal pathways.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
