Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. I was thrown into surgically induced menopause 5-years ago. I was placed on .09 mg Premarin, 1 per day, by my OB/GYN. My DO didn t like that and changed it to 2 mg Estrace, 2 times day. Now, I suffer from severe edema in my ankles, aka: cankles. Help!
Dear Patient, Thanks for contacting HCM I would like to inform you that one of the side effect with the use of Estrace is ankle edema and the severe edema you are having may be due to use of estrace. If i were your treating physician i would have informed you about the risk of edema and ways to prevent it. The risk of edema can be minimized by avoiding long hours of standing and if you have a desk job, take 5-10 minutes break after 1 hour of work and move around in the office itself. While in the chair don't keep your legs resting rather keep moving your feet up and down. If possible place a small stool under your legs while you are in chair so that your legs are raised. In the night when you are in bed you can place cushion or pillow under your legs to raise them. Also i would also like to know if you have any shortness of breath, loss of appetite, swelling at any other place, palpitation (unusual feel of heart beat), yellowish eye or hands. to rule out other causes of swelling of feet. Hope this has helped you Regards
Yes estrace (estradiol) can cause peripheral edema in some people. You can ask your doctor to offer Premarin which is a conjugated estrogen or any other alternatives if the ankle edema is too much bothersome. There is always a chance you might not have the edemna as a side effect to Premarin. Hope the above information helps you. Thanks.
