Does Godex Cause Elevated SGPT Levels?

Hi doctor pls help. My friend is hepatitis b carrier. In their company they have annual labworks which is spgt test is inlcuded. This year his sgpt level was 62 then since he need medical certificate for US visa their company doctor advice him to do repeat sgpt level and it was 59. To lessen his sgpt level the doctor prescribed him godex thrice daily for 2 weeks and also vitamin E. Aside from that he is doing exercise everyday. He completed the doses for 2 weeks and yesterday repeat sgpt was done but so sad his sgpt level is getting higher its 95 u/dl. How does it happen doctor? Is that possible that the godex can increase the sgpt? And what to do to lower his sgpt so he can secure a medicate certificate for US visa?

Hi,

First of all I don't believe that Godex is the cause of SGPT levels elevation. Your friend requires more testing for various causes of transaminases' levels elevation including (at least) the following:
- Hepatitis B tests: surface antigen and antibody, core antibody IgG and IgM
- Hepatitis C tests: antibody against HCV
- Hepatitis D tests: antibody against HDV (may coexist with HBV infection)
- Autoimmune hepatitis testing with antinuclear antibodies and anti-smooth muscle cells antibodies and anti-liver-kidney antibodies (anti-LKM1).
- Ultrasound scan of the upper abdomen
- Repeat measurements of all liver function tests (SGOT, SGPT, ALP, gamma-GT, bilirubin).

If the aforementioned tests are not conclusive further testing for less common disorders (like Wilson's disease and others) may be considered. In some cases monitoring is recommended and if a worsening is detected then a biopsy may provide additional clues.

In many cases the cause of SPGT levels elevation is just fatty liver disease. This is particularly so for obese individuals or patients with diabetes or significant consumption of alcohol. If all the suggested tests are negative and there's fatty infiltration on the ultrasound scan then fatty liver would be the most likely cause. In such cases loosing weight is the only way for the tests to improve.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
